About Program

About This Course

English is an important language socially, politically and economically. On this course you will learn how English works, why and how it is used. You will also study media topics including, television and radio, film and video, design, professional writing, journalism and advertising. This course will equip you with in-depth knowledge and a range of relevant technical and practical – highly-valued and sought-after by employers.

In studying the English language, you will learn about subjects such as: the grammatical structure (e.g. word order, sounds, meaning); the history of English; dialects and social variation; social, educational and cultural aspects; global English, and more.

In studying Media, you will get the opportunity to acquire technical, practical, theoretical and multilingual skills relevant to the field, to learn how to critically evaluate media such as film, to consider media ethics, and beyond.

Course Content

This course will be taught by a combination of lectures, tutorials and/or seminars, depending on the module and level. You will choose 120 credits of modules relating to English Language and Media Studies each year (60 credits in each field), where you will start by learning the foundational knowledge and skills required to study in these fields, before later being able to choose the areas, periods and/or disciplines you would like to specialize in. Modules are assessed on the basis of different kinds of coursework, including essays, reports, oral presentations, tests, exams, data analysis, etc. You will do a dissertation or project in your final year which represents an original piece of work which you will undertake under the supervision of a member of staff.

Our four libraries provide a range of attractive study environments including collaborative work areas, meeting rooms and silent study spaces.

We have an extensive collection of books and journals and many of the journals are available online in full-text format.

We house one of the largest university-based archives not only in Wales, but also the UK. Allied to the Archives is the Special Collections of rare printed books.

Learning Resources

There is a range of learning resources available, supported by experienced staff, to help you in your studies.
The University’s IT Services provides computing, media and reprographics facilities and services including:

  • Over 1,150 computers for students, with some PC rooms open 24 hours a day
  • Blackboard, a commercial Virtual Learning Environment, that makes learning materials available on-line.

Careers

Most walks of life benefit from having language and/or media experts on their team. As a graduate of this course you will have the knowledge and understanding needed to go into fields like the media, translation, interpreting, publishing, teaching, civil service, speech therapy, community work (e.g. related to language policy and engagement), etc. In some cases you will need further training and qualifications beyond what this course provides. A career in research is also an option, as is postgraduate study.

Foundation Year

'With Foundation Year' options are available for this course. Apply for Media Studies and Production (with Foundation Year) or English Language and English Literature (with Foundation Year).

What is a Foundation Year course?

If you don’t have the required qualifications for the degree-level course or are looking to re-enter education after time away from study, then a Foundation Year Programme might be the right choice for you.

The Foundation Year is an excellent introduction to studying this subject at university and will provide you with the knowledge, skills and confidence required to go on to study this course at degree-level.

When you have successfully completed the Foundation Year, you can progress on to the first year of this degree-level course.
